Paducah, Kentucky, USA - Laura Di Cera from San Lazzaro di Savena is a semifinalist for the 2015 AQS QuiltWeek - Des Moines, Iowa Semptember 30 - October 3, 2015, at the Iowa Events Center.
Laura has been chosen to display the quilt, St. Joseph, along with 161 others in this AQS contest.

Quilts were enteres in this international contest from 37 US states and 10 other countries.

In parole semplici, hanno selezionato un mio quilt, INEDITO!!, per essere ulteriormente valutato da una giuria internazionale in uno dei prestigiosissimi concorsi organizzati dall'AQS!! Dovrò vedermela con ben altri 161 gioielli ma io sono già al settimo cielo e posso dire di essere onorata nel sapere che il mio quilt rientrerà tra i 161 lavori esposti fra pochissimi giorni nell' Iowa Events Center!!

GIOCATORE DI PELOTA

I was inspired by the Player to Pelota of the Mayan Civilization. This is the disk of Chinkultic which is located in the National Museum fo Anthropology in Mexico City. 

Dimensioni 150x150 cm

Materiale: Cotone americano, sete indiane, painstick, imbottitura di cotone, fili di rayon e metallici, lamine d'oro e di bronzo.

Per i più curiosi: ho usato filati Aurifil, Madeira e ho utilizzato una Bernina Artista 640! 

La storia:

Una lunga storia.... iniziata in occasione del concorso organizzato dalla fiera di Parma per l'edizione 2013 di Italia Invita. 

L'argomento era "La quadratura del cerchio" e visto che i miei figli adorano il calcio, ho pensato di fare un quilt con il calciatore di Pelota.

La Pelota era un gioco praticato nell'ambito di tutte le grandi civiltà dell'America precolombiana. Ogni città maya classica possedeva uno o più terreni di gioco.

Il campo da gioco era fiancheggiato ai lati da due alti muri nei quali erano infissi due grandi anelli di pietra.

I giocatori dovevano far passare la palla negli anelli di pietra. La palla, fabbricata in caucciù, doveva essere lanciata solo con le spalle, le ginocchia o le anche, non doveva mai toccare terra e vinceva chi commetteva meno errori.

Il capitano della squadra perdente veniva decapitato da un giocatore dell'altra squadra.

Ho scelto tessuti con colori che ricordassero quelli usati dalla civiltà maya, volutamente raffinati, che ricordassero la terra e la pietra. Il mio intento era quello di realizzare un enorme prezioso medaglione non sfacciato, dai colori sobri e con un contrasto non eccessivo.

Ho vivacizzato il bassorilievo con foglie d'oro e di bronzo e con la tintura di tessuto neutro con painstick metallizzati.

Sebbene finalista al Concorso di Italia Invita, l'organizzazione non mi ha consegnato alcuna scheda di valutazione del mio lavoro. 

Come ho scritto varie volte, non partecipo ai concorsi per vincere, bensì per vedere la mia opera in mostra e per avere soprattutto un giudizio costruttivo da parte della giuria che, ritenendola sempre altamente qualificata, ritengo possa aiutarmi a crescere come artista.

... Pazienza... quel giorno mi sono rifatta gli occhi con la bellissima mostra dell'artista giapponese Noriko Endo, ospite d'onore alla fiera di Parma!

Ma... visto che sono moooolto testarda... ho pensato di iscrivere il mio giocatore al Festival of Quilts di Birmingham ed ecco una GRAN SODDISFAZIONE: 2 schede di valutazione FANTASTICHE!!!

Tutta contenta, qualche mese dopo il ritorno del mio giocatore in Italia, l'ho iscritto al Concorso dell'AQS. Troppe ore di lavoro sprecate... il mio Maya doveva farsi valere non solo oltremanica ma anche oltreoceano! (certo che scegliere proprio questa manifestazione megagalattica è stato rischiosissimo, e in cuor mio non avrei mai pensato di riuscire a passare la selezione)

E .... SODDISFAZIONE ANCORA PIU' GRANDE!!!!!!

E' STATO SELEZIONATO PER ESSERE ESPOSTO AD UNO DEGLI APPUNTAMENTI PIU' IMPORTANTI DEL PATCHWORK AMERICANO E MONDIALE

L'AQS QUILT WEEK DI PHOENIX IN ARIZONA!!!!!

E sorpresa delle sorprese?

Il mio nome era inserito in una lista lunghissima di nomi fra cui quello della Noriko Endo!!!

Quindi.... in questo caso si può proprio dire che nulla capita per caso...

il cerchio si è richiuso perfettamente!

Finalmente dedico un post al mio Giocatore di Pelota!
Ho tantissime cose da raccontarvi su di lui... ha girato già mezzo mondo, è andato in aereo più volte della sottoscritta ed ora è esposto a Phoenix, in una delle più prestigiose manifestazioni di patchwork americano e mondiale!!
Voglio farvi leggere parte della lettera che ho ricevuto quando mi hanno annunciato che il mio quilt era stato selezionato per essere esposto insieme ad altri 249 opere al concorso dell'AQS: emozionante!!!!

Regardless of how Pelota Player places in the final judging, all semifinalists ́ quilts will be displayed at the show, which is expected to draw more than 15,000 people.

AQS Founder and President Meredith Schroeder says, “Extraordinary quilts are being made by today’s quilters, and the contest quilts represent an extensive variety of styles, sizes, and techniques. Each quilt in the show is an intricate, creative work of art to enjoy.”

Quilts were entered in this international contest from 42 U.S. states and 7 other countries. 

Come see a wide range of special exhibit quilts including: Stitch Like an Egyptian, Route 66 Quilts, Oh, Wow! Miniature Quilts from the National Quilt Museum, Cow Stampede, GO! Have Fun Quilt Challenge; Quilted in Honor, SAQA Masters II, the Modern Quilt Challenge, and the Arizona Centennial Quilt.

The American Quilter’s Society hosts seven shows annually, each with its own quilt contest. Besides the Phoenix show, AQS hosts other prestigious shows in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Paducah, Kentucky; Charlotte, North Carolina; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Des Moines, Iowa.
